When it comes to hair, I have pretty much tried it all. Any time I need a change in my life, I go for the easy target. I love to experiment with new colors and blends and I have no problem with taking some extreme measures to get the color that I want.

Because of this, a few years back, I totally fried my long and luscious mane and had to chop it all off!

I learned a lesson that day and decided to keep a routine in. This would allow me to dye my hair, but then let it rest to grow and regain some of the strength to do it all over again.

Here are a few ways that you can color your hair naturally, while growing you hair!

BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN!:

I am a blonde myself and I have bleached my hair SO many times, wanting desperately to get the Gwen S look. Since that is just impossible, I gave up and decided to grow it out.

If you have ever bleached your hair and let it grow, you know what I mean when I say one word:

“SKUNK”

Like most blondes, the roots grow out darker, and lighten as it gets more exposure to the sun.

The best thing to do is to target the roots in order to make this appear less harsh and to blend more with your white locks.

HERE IS A SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE DIY SPRAY THAT WILL HELP YOU ACHIEVE THIS EFFECT (WORKS FOR LIGHT BROWN HAIR, AS WELL)

First, get a small to medium sized spray bottle. Fill it with:

  • Juice from a lemon
  • A capful of hydrogen peroxide
  • Fill the rest with water

You can soak the scalp before laying out in the sun OR spray in your hair after drying your hair with a towel, after a shower. Blow drying helps to accelerate the lightening process.

You can use this daily until you reach the desired effect.

ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATION:

Pick up some “blue-ing shampoo”. Old ladies use it to keep their hair that gorgeous silver color and it really cuts out the brass tones. You can ask for this at a Beauty Supply store and they often sell if at Target. John Frieda sells one that is labeled for blondes-the shampoo and conditioner is a blueish/purple hue.

 PAINT THE TOWN RED

I have dyed my hair red many a time and I have found those that LOVE the color but it is a tough color to maintain, meaning you need dye your hair quite a bit to keep up the look. That means a LOT of toxins and fumes that might not be the best for you!

For this, I suggest that you purchase and use Henna. This is all natural, can be found online and at some beauty supply stores. They sell it at most art supply stores, as well.

What you will need:

A bowl

  • Henna powder
  • Warm/hot water
  • A tool to mix the henna
  • GLOVES (this stuff stains, ladies and gents)
  • Clothes to wear that you do not mind getting ruined (put that Dolce dress away for the night)

HERE IS WHAT YOU DO:

  • Bring water to a simmer and let sit
  • Take your Henna powder and place in a bowl-using enough to cover the desired area
  • Make a paste with the powder by slowly pouring very minute amounts of water in the bowl and stirring. You are really going for a paste, not a liquid. Ensure that you have mixed well to avoid any lumps in the mixture.
  • Section your hair in easy to handle parts. Work the product in, from root to tip, until your desired area is fully covered.
  • Alas, you do need to leave this product on for several HOURS in order to stain the hair. That is what it is doing. The plant naturally stains the hair.
  • Wash out and enjoy your new look!

I do want to make it clear, the lighter your hair, the more red is the tone. Darker hair will achieve a more maroon look, which is still amazing!

Also, this is perfect for teens as it IS all natural, no chemicals and it is a great way to have fun!

 GET KOOL FOR THE SUMMER

shutterstock_257264380

When I was younger, my parents were actually pretty great when it came to me expressing myself. I have always loved changing my hair colors and styles at a young age. Regardless, parents are still parents and were worried about the effects of toxic chemicals that I would need to be exposed to in order to create colorful rainbow effects on my hair.

The solution? Oh Yeah!

KOOL-AID!

This is similar to the Henna powder in that: all you need is the powder itself and simple things found right at home!

You will need:

  • 4 packs of the desired color (I used to do purple and pinks the most)
  • A bowl to mix
  • A mixing tool
  • Conditioner (any kind will do)
  • Gloves
  • Clothes that you do not mind to mess up

Simply:

  • In your mixing bowl, empty the desired amount of packets (eyeball it as you may have thick hair, long or short hair, etc. Maybe you only want the tips, sections, etc)
  • Put an amount of conditioner that you would normally use for one condition in the shower (to cover your whole head)
  • Mix these together
  • Put on your gloves and go to work.
  • Leave on for 45 minutes to an hour. You can check if it is holding by simply rubbing a strand of hair. If it is a light tint, simply leave it in longer that the hour.
  • Wash out and blow dry!

As a note, this does not last extremely long. Depending on the shade that you use, effects may wear out faster. Darker colors usually stay on longer such as: red, purple and blue. Yellow and orange may wash out faster, as the color itself is already very light. The same goes for pink.

TIP: MIX AND MATCH COLORS TO GET DIFFERENT SHADES AND TONES! FOR INSTANCE: MIX TWO PACKS OF GREEN AND ONE PACK YELLOW TO GIVE THE NEON EFFECT. MIX ONE PACK OF PINK AND ONE RED TO MAKE A RICHER PINK! THE OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS.
